East Norwegian Twp. – At least one man died last Thursday morning when his car struck a carrier along Route 209 in the vicinity of Boardman Brothers Motor Car Co. just east of Port Carbon. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic was closed in the areas after the 9:00 o’clock accident happened that morning.

The fatality was from Pottsville who died when the car he was operating hit a vehicle carrier between Port Carbon and New Philadelphia in US209n in East Norwegian Township.

Emergency responders arrived after 9:00 o’clock that morning at the front area of Cumbola’s Motor Car Company of Boardman Brothers after they received a report of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

Witnesses reported that emergency crew arrived on scene within a few minutes. Rescuers had to cut the roof off the vehicle to free the man who was trapped inside. However, the fast response of the rescuers were futile as they driver succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities identified the victim as Scott Bedford, age 31 and resident of Pottsville. He died on the scene following a crash last Thursday morning in Schuylkill County.

Officials recounted that as carrier truck and a car collided at about around 9:00 o’clock in the morning on Route 209 in the intersection of New Philadelphia and Port Carbon.

According to the State police, Bedford was operating a Chevy Malibu, and was approaching a curve going to the right. He failed to negotiate it and crossed the center line to the left. At this time, his Malibu collided with the truck driven by Wilson C. Murray, age 45 and resident of West Chester, Pa.

Investigation is ongoing to discover the cause of the crash but police mentioned that it could be the weather as it was raining. The weather report stated it was a kind of misty rain which may or may not have been enough to affect visibility. Murray has not been charged and does not seem to have done anything which would constitute legal fault.

Troopers believed that Bedford might have lost control as he was going around a curve and hit the truck going south.

Due to the wreck, US209 was closed for about four hours while State Police investigated the crash, and crews cleared the scene. There was very little damage seen on the vehicle carrier.

Aside from the Emergency team from the New Philadelphia, the EMS of Port Carbon, Cumbola, East Norwegian Twp., Port Carbon and Pottsville were active responders to the accident.

It might be recalled that a fatal crash also happened last month at the same location where one male victim died and his passenger was seriously injured after his sport utility vehicle crashed into a tree.

Residents around the area said that the place is now called “Dead Man’s Curve in Cumbola”  and added that authorities must do something to slow traffic down around the curve.
